Yuma County's fiscal reporting has earned its finance office another set of national awards.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, a professional organization for people who work in government finance, awarded the Yuma County Finance Services Department three Certificates of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the way it presented the county's financial statements.

The seals of high approval were for Yuma County's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the county as a whole, its CAFR for the county jail district and its condensed version of the general report geared toward the general public.

The Certificate of Achievement is for demonstrating the highest standards of financial accounting and full disclosure. An impartial panel selected Yuma County's finance crew for the honors, which recognized reports for fiscal year 2011.

Scott G. Holt, director of financial services for Yuma County, praised his team for their group effort in compiling the fiscal information for both county management and the public.

He said the county has been a consistent recipient of the honor. “My staff is really, really good. They're very conscientious in getting this done.”

County wins finance award for fourth straight year

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded Yuma County's Finance Department, for the fourth consecutive year, a certificate of excellence for the way it presented the county's financial statements, according to a news release from the county.
"The accomplishment places the county in the top 4 percent of reporting agencies nationwide," the release said.
In that release, County Finance Director Doug Allen said: "This award continues to validate the commitment to the integrity of our office and demonstrates a significant accomplishment for Yuma County. "
The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, or CAFR, was also awarded for the Yuma County Jail District's financial statements for the second consecutive year.
GFOA also awarded the county for the third consecutive year the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting award and two Distinguished Awards in Budgeting, the release said.
The association is a nonprofit professional group serving approximately 14,000 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

County budget receives another national accolade

Yuma County's budgeting practices have earned it another award from a national association of government finance officials.
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, announced this week, is the fourth award for accounting or budgeting practices that the county has received from the Government Finance Officers Association over the past 2. years, county officials said.
"I've made the statement before that we were looking to build a dynasty, and I think we've done that," county Finance Director Doug Allen said. "Now we are going to maintain it."
The latest award was given to the county for its 2003-04 budget. Yuma County is only one of 900 municipal or county governments in the nation to win the award.
To receive the budget award, the county had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentations in four areas.
These guidelines are designed to assess how well the county's budget serves as a policy document, as a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated in all four categories to receive the award.

County gets accolades for financial reporting

All the numbers are adding up for Yuma County finances.
And as a result, the county's finance department has been given one of the nation's highest marks for the way it prepares and presents its annual financial report.
The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence was recently awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for the year ending June 30, 2001.
The high accolades comes on just the first occasion the county has prepared and submitted one of its reports.
"We couldn't ask to receive a higher honor for the work done in this department," said Douglas Allen, director of Financial Services for Yuma County. "It shows a lot of dedication and commitment by the staff to put forth the effort to disclose and show the reports in this way."
Allen, who was hired in June of 2001, said he was both stunned and relieved.
"We were relieved that we actually qualified and made it, and stunned at the same time that we had won," Allen said.
In order to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, the county published an easily readable and efficiently organized report of its finances.
The new comprehensive report, which is available for public review, details generally accepted accounting principles and applicable legal requirements.
The certificate is valid for a period of one year.
By submitting the report, which is not required, Allen said, it demonstrates the finance department is meeting the highest standard of disclosure and clearly communicating the county's financial picture.
"The first time you participate is intense because you have to do a 10-year compilation of financial, economic, social and demographic information," Allen said. "It's a standard for assessing information relevant to the county's financial condition."
