Russell has two sons, both work for the family business. In 1999, he attended Rapport Leadership International's leadership program and became a Master Graduate of that program in 2001. He graduated from Project CENTRL in 2003, a two-year rural leadership program administered by the U of A. He then graduated from Yuma Leadership in 2004. These experiences led him to a successful run for the Yuma County Board of Supervisors in 2004. He has since become a Fellow, Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy.
Russell is a member of Fort Yuma Rotary and has served three terms as a board member since 2001. In 2002, he started a fund raising committee for Amberly's Place as part of his experience with Project CENTRL. His successful efforts led to an invitation to join the Board of Directors for Amberly's Place in 2003 where he still serves.
