A contractor working for Yuma County is expected to begin a limited storm drain project as soon as March 25 at the eastern edge of the City of Yuma’s Smucker Park. The work is expected to continue until approximately April 10.
The project will connect a new storm drain to an existing manhole in a natural drainage area near Avenue A and 28th Street. The work is intended to help address localized stormwater flooding that can occur in the area during rain events.
This is a specific drainage project and is not expected to affect access to the open portion of the park. Work will take place in the park’s northern section, north of 28th Street, during the current park closure with the intention of preventing an additional park closure in the future. That area of the park is not expected to reopen until mid-May, following tree replanting and turf seeding by the City of Yuma.
Motorists on Avenue A near 28th Street may notice excavation activity and soil stockpiles associated with the deep underground work.
