Housing Choice Voucher

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program provides financial assistance to help eligible low income families obtain decent housing.

Under a contract with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Yuma County Housing Department has been authorized to make rental assistance payments to landlords of existing rental housing in Yuma County (outside of Yuma City limits) on behalf of eligible low income families.

There are 401 Yuma County families participating in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. Under this program, a family locates a qualifying rental unit and signs a lease with the property owner, with approval from the Housing Department. The Housing Department then enters into a Housing Assistance Payment Contract with the owner, and the Section 8 participant enters into the approved lease with the owner. This program gives the participant the opportunity to choose the housing type and location.
