Our Mission


Our mission is to locate, identify and appraise all property that is subject to ad-valorem taxation, at current market value or at the level established by law, classify all property by Assessment category and process exemptions established by law.

About Us
The Yuma County Assessor’s Office employs 33 full time employees and is responsible for annually assessing 88,000 real property parcels, 16,500 mobile home accounts, and 5,800 commercial personal property accounts. The office is divided into sections that specialize in appraising the various property types and administering the office.

Administration Section
Responsible for processing exemption and valuation protection option applications, sales affidavit indexing and scanning, tax roll correction resolutions.

Residential Section
Lists and appraises all residential and simple commercial property in the urban areas including condominiums, manufactured homes, site built homes.

Commercial Section
Lists and appraises all complex commercial property with the exception of utilities, mines, railroads, and telecommunication companies. Responsible for auditing personal property renditions from businesses.

Agricultural/Rural Property Section
Lists and appraises all agricultural property and all property uses in the rural areas of the county including vacant land. Responsible for auditing personal property renditions from agricultural operations.

Equalization Section
Responsible for analyzing sales data and conducting review appraisals of areas in the county that are in need of market adjustment or physical review.

Title Record Section
Responsible for reviewing all deeds and other documents that transfer title to both real property and mobile homes.

BIOGRAPHY

Joseph L. Wehrle

Joseph Wehrle

Joe was first elected Yuma County Assessor in 1992 and re-elected in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. Prior to that time he served as Alberta Smith's Chief Deputy for 16 years. Before his employment with the County of Yuma he served in several capacities within the City of Yuma Finance Department including Assistant Finance Director.

During his tenure with the Yuma County office he has served on several Assessor, Department of Revenue and Legislative committees including the Joint Legislative Committee on Property Tax Appeals; Department of Revenue Cost Manual Committee; Land Valuation Technical Advisory Committee; and the Assessment Advisory Committee. Joe is a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers and the Arizona Association of Assessing Officers, of which he served as President during 1994, 2008 and again in 2016.

Joe is almost an Arizona native. His parents moved him to Yuma when he was six months old. Except for ten years spent in Indiana he has lived in Yuma all of his life. He graduated from KOFA High School in 1970 and attended Arizona Western College majoring in accounting with a minor in computer programming and photographic art. 

Active in a number of civic organizations, Joe is currently a member of the Sunrise Optimist Club of Yuma and the Arizona Historical Society. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Sunrise Optimist Club and as President in 2011-12, Yuma Fine Arts Association; Trade Club of Yuma and Yuma Main Street, Inc.

Joe is married to a wonderful woman, Grace. He is the father of three children; Joe Jr., Jamie and Rebecca. He is stepfather to Grace’s three children; Gene, Joy and Marc. He has seven granddaughters, Courtney,Britney, Abigail, Bianca, Liberty, Alyson and Hope.  He also has two grandsons, Michael and Jacob.
